Best Colour Sandeel and Bucktail Jigs for Bass fishing in the United Kingdom?
When it comes to bass fishing in the United Kingdom, anglers face the challenge of selecting the right lure, as well as the most suitable colour for the lure. Sandeel Jigs and Bucktail Jigs are a good choice due to their versatility and effectiveness. However, not all colours yield the same results. Understanding the best colour options can greatly enhance your bass fishing experience! The bucktail jigs above were made during our bucktail development and testing period before our NBA Sandeels were developed, they proved to be real catchers!
We then took the enhancement a step further for our 2025 NBA Sandeels; the latest colours may be seen on the Sandeel Menu Page.
Understanding Bass Behaviour
Bass are known for their aggressive feeding habits, but research shows their preferences can vary depending on a few key factors, including water clarity, time of day, and seasonal changes. These elements influence the visibility and attractiveness of your chosen jig colour.
The Most Effective Colours for Bass Lure Fishing
White:
The classic choice, white bucktail jigs, are particularly effective in most waters. They mimic shad or other baitfish and stand out against darker backgrounds, making them easy for bass to spot. We have taken this aspect a step further with our enhanced colour, White Flash.
Chartreuse:
This vibrant colour is a favourite among many anglers. Chartreuse bucktail jigs work well in both clear and stained waters, providing high visibility. The brightness of chartreuse tends to provoke aggressive reactions from bass, especially in low-light conditions like dawn or dusk. Included in this group are the fluorescent yellow and green.
Striking a balance with combination colours can also yield excellent results. For instance, using a white and chartreuse combo jig can take advantage of the strong visibility of chartreuse while maintaining a natural look with white.
Sandeel:
These are the colours leaning towards the natural colours of baitfish, other than white. Many bass lures fall into this group, showing a leaning towards the metallic blues and silver, a logical choice for fishermen.
Seasonal Considerations:
It's important to consider seasonal changes when selecting your jig colour. In early spring, when the water is colder, natural colours might perform better as bass tend to feed less aggressively. As the temperatures rise towards summer, brighter colours may trigger more strikes. In autumn, as the water cools again and bass begins to feed heavily before winter, you can experiment with both natural and vibrant colours to see what works best on that particular day.
Another aspect is using Black lures at night, black lures are a good choice for those well-versed in the dark arts!
Conclusion - My Personal Opinion
Honesty is the best policy! What colour Sandeel or bucktail jigs would you find in my lure box? More than half of my jigs would be in White Flash in different weights, as the sizes assist in differing water depths. White works; it's as simple as that!
The remaining space in my lure box would be mostly taken up with a Sandeel colour.
Lastly, I'd find space for one or two with chartreuse for those days when the water clarity is really bad.
Choosing the right colour jig can significantly impact your success when fishing for bass in the UK. Each water body is different, and conditions can change quickly. Be sure to think and adapt your strategies based on the water's clarity, time of day, and seasonal patterns. Don't hesitate to experiment with different colours to find the best match for your local waters. Or follow my lead and fill your box with white bucktails, some sand eel, and a few fluorescent combos.
